Welcome to the Basic Gemology course.
This program consists of ten lessons covering the origin and chemical nature of gemstones, their physical and optical properties, magnetism, basic crystallography, the absorption of light, refraction and reflection, polarized light, pleochroism, specific gravity, luminescence, magnification, classification and types of inclusions, and thermal conductivity.
We will also look closely at the various instruments used to identify gemstones including the spectroscope, the refractometer, the polariscope, the dichroscope, hydrostatic testing and specific gravity liquids, ultraviolet light (long-wave and short-wave) and x-rays, the hand loupe, the microscope, the reflectivity meter, and the various diamond and moissanite testers.
At the end of each lesson you will find a lesson review and midway through the course there is a fifty question multiple choice ‘open’ book test that covers the first five lessons and is accessible online. At the end of the course there is a second fifty question multiple choice online test that covers all ten lessons.
We hope you enjoy the course and that you will also want to explore the other courses.
